 Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the schedule for the Indian Economic Service (IES) and Indian Statistical Service (ISS) Examination 2025. The official notification was released on February 12, 2025. Interested candidates can submit their applications from February 12 to March 4, 2025. The examination is set to commence on June 21, 2025.

 About the Examination

The IES and ISS examinations are prestigious tests conducted by UPSC. They aim to recruit qualified candidates into the Indian Economic Service and the Indian Statistical Service. These services play a crucial role in the country's economic and statistical sectors.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for these examinations, candidates must meet specific educational qualifications:

  • Indian Economic Service (IES): A Post-Graduate Degree in Economics, Applied Economics, Business Economics, or Econometrics from a recognized university.

  • Indian Statistical Service (ISS): A Bachelor's Degree with Statistics, Mathematical Statistics, or Applied Statistics as one of the subjects, or a Master's Degree in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics, or Applied Statistics from a recognized university.

Additionally, candidates should be between 21 and 30 years of age as of August 1, 2025. Age relaxations are applicable as per government norms.

Application Process

The application process is entirely online. Candidates need to visit the official UPSC website to apply. The application form is divided into two parts: Part I and Part II. In Part I, candidates must provide their basic information. In Part II, they need to pay the examination fee, select the examination center, upload a photograph, signature, and photo identity card document. The examination consists of a written test followed by a viva-voce (interview).

  • Written Examination: This comprises six papers, totaling 1000 marks.

    • For Both IES and ISS:

      • General English: 100 marks

    • For IES:

      • General Economics-I: 200 marks

      • General Economics-II: 200 marks

      • General Economics-III: 200 marks

      • Indian Economics: 200 marks

    • For ISS:

      • Statistics-I (Objective): 200 marks

      • Statistics-II (Objective): 200 marks

      • Statistics-III (Descriptive): 200 marks

      • Statistics-IV (Descriptive): 200 marks

Each paper has a specific duration, and candidates must prepare accordingly.

 Syllabus Overview

The syllabus is comprehensive and covers various topics:

  • General English: Essay writing, comprehension, and grammar.

  • General Studies: Current events, Indian polity, geography, economy, general science, and history with a focus on the Freedom Movement.

  • Economics Papers (For IES): Economic theory, growth and development, international economics, public finance, and Indian economy.

  • Statistics Papers (For ISS): Probability, statistical methods, inference, linear models, and applied statistics.

 Selection Process

Candidates must first clear the written examination. Those who qualify will be called for the viva-voce, which carries 200 marks. The final selection is based on the combined scores of the written exam and the interview.
